Not only does encountering art in the street or park provide us with a range of emotions from surprise, even shock and challenge at new ideas, “why is this here – is this art?”, in addition, connecting to art in our very ‘built’ environment sends the clear message of the need to connect with the natural world, yielding benefits for our health and social and emotional well-being.
Get ready to see a 25-foot tall bare, startlingly red, and pink tree which is sprouting from the High Line this May. Opening on May 8th, Old Tree is the third Plinth sculpture to grace the Spur section of the High Line at 10th Avenue and West 30th Street. Then, be sure to pass by on Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets, you will find a calming presence, Kneeler, positioned to evoke calm and a universal harmony amongst all people, intended to be touched and even sat upon, this simple sculptural figure by Joy Brown is a soothing surprise to be found in such a busy location and allows us to consider the benefits of repose and reflection. Phyllida Barlow’s work, PRANK at City Hall Park in Manhattan is playful, sensational in scope and whimsical and opening June 7th. Her work, constructed of recycled materials, shows a confidence and exuberance in its scale and vision. Being open to innovative ideas and perspectives is one of the underpinnings of a social emotional experience, acceptance of others’ vision and awe at the drive and persistence it takes to believe in your own vision, a subtle boost to your own self-esteem.
